PREPARING TO GO

by A to Z for Moms Like Me

Each Spring we take a family vacation, usually to CA. Being a planned yearly trip we budget and make plans months in advance.

Our activities and the length of the trip depend on what campaign & sponsors involved through my existing blog A to Z for Moms Like Me.

Knowing we’ll be taking a trip each year in March or April, we plan ahead in a few ways:

  1. Setting cash aside for gas and spending money. Even $5-20 here and there adds up over a few months. This money is set aside in a special money bag so it doesn’t get mistaken with other savings or cash. Make sure to put any tickets, hotel reservations etc. with the cash in the same bag so that everything related to the trip is together.
  2. Purchase gift cards to restaurants and fast food places. (these get added to the money bag for the trip) This way we know where we’ll be eating and the meals are prepaid.
  3. Travel snacks- buying & making homemade travel snacks to take on the trip will save money and prevent those gas station snack temptations which can quickly add up. (watch for sales on some items before the trip, and for homemade snacks- some can be made and frozen in advance)
  4. Once we know how many days we’ll be on vacation, and what we’ll be doing, I will start planning out our daily meals. (with some flexibility) Typically my list looks something like this:
    • Travel snacks: licorice, carrots, oranges, chips, crackers
    • Day 1- Leave in the morning
      • Lunch- fast food on the drive (gift card)
      • Dinner- Costco Pizza
    • Day 2- Breakfast at the hotel
      • Lunch- (at whatever event/theme park we’re at for the day)
      • Dinner- (depending on what park we’re at, this may be covered there as well)
    • Day 3- Breakfast at the hotel
      • Lunch- (at whatever event/theme park we’re at for the day)
      • Dinner- (depending on what park we’re at, this may be covered there as well)
    • Day 4- Breakfast at the hotel
      • Lunch- gift card
      • Dinner- home

This gives me a clear idea of what exactly we need to budget, pack and plan for.
