DUTCH OVEN 5 DECKER DINNER

by admin

We wanted to try something different in the dutch oven the last time we went camping. That’s when I realized my moms 5 Decker dinner recipe would be perfect in a dutch oven since it’s all cooked in one pan together.

This idea turned out to be a great hit! And a perfect meal while camping (or at home) because it doesn’t need side dishes to go with it.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb bacon
  • 2 lb ground beef
  • 6-8 potatoes- sliced
  • 1 bag of broccoli
  • 2 c. carrots
  • 1 onion- sliced
  • cheese (optional)

Instructions

Layer all ingredients into the dutch oven: bacon, ground beef, veggies. (don't add cheese yet)

Put the lid on the dutch oven and place 6-8 coals on top and 6-8 on bottom.  You want to cook this low and slow so you don't burn your bacon.

It will take about a hour to cook.  Once the ground beef and bacon are cooked add the cheese and serve.

Is there a way to possibly bake this in my cast iron dutch oven in my kitchens oven?

Yes!
Normally I make this in a deep frying pan with a lid on my stove top. My mom used to make it in a plug in pan.
