DAY 16

by A to Z for Moms Like Me

Breakfast & lunch were the usual. As I’m writing this phrase almost each post I’m realizing maybe I should have just focused on dinners for this budget sharing. Normally we all do our own thing for breakfast that includes: not eating, cereal, breakfast drink, or maybe leftovers. (I am not really a breakfast person). And lunches during the week all our kids except the youngest one are in school and eat lunch there, the youngest, my husband and I typically eat sandwiches or leftovers for our lunch. Weekends vary and we usually will make breakfast or brunch as a family, I’ll share the differences on those days.

For dinner on this day, my 11 year old son was in charge. He chose spaghetti and since it’s been awhile since we had it, it actually sounded good! Making spaghetti isn’t a complicated recipe so I’m not going to include it in the recipes, but basically we cook & season the ground beef, add a few jars of sauce (one of the few things I’ve discovered is not worth the time and effort to can our own) and mix in the noodles. He made some garlic toast by spreading butter & garlic powder on some toast. On this night we had a friend of my boys over and he had dinner with us. We always make plenty of spaghetti because it is one that my family will always heat up the next day for leftovers.

The cost of this dinner:

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef- $4.50
  • 3 jars of sauce- $3.90
  • 2 packages of pasta- $2.00
  • 10 slices of garlic toast- $1.50

Total cost for this day: $11.90

Running Total Budget for the 30 days used:

Groceries purchased: $567.10

Groceries used in meals: $170.67

Date Night: $74.33

Pizza: $49.38

Our budget for these 3 for the 30 days is: Groceries- $600, Date Nights- $100 & Pizza- $100 Since we may not use all the groceries purchased in this time, and will be using some things we have on hand already, we will be tracking both the running total of the best estimated cost of meals each day as well as the cost of groceries/date nights/pizza purchased during the 30 days.
