by A to Z for Moms Like Me

It’s CASE LOT time!! I love shopping case lot sales, you can really save a lot of money and stock up on items you use the most. You do have to be careful though, not all caselots are a good deal. Sometimes you’re just buying more at the normal price. So pay attention to the individual cost of the items to find the best deals. Even though the majority of this will go into our food storage, it’s things we’ll have on hand so I’m adding it to our monthly out of pocket expense budget. Part of the reason I’m tracking a running total of both the groceries we purchase over the 30 days, but also the cost of the food we eat is because with a large family I will stock up on things we use often such as with this case lot sale. In the short run it may increase our monthly budget, but in the long run it saves us money and provides a food storage for us as well. I prefer to think of things as long term rather than just by the week or the month. Here’s what I got at this case lot trip:

  • 24- 16oz jars of peanut butter- $0.99 each
  • 24 cans of pork & beans- $0.50 each
  • 24 jars of Ragu Spaghetti sauce- $1.39 each (not the best price, but we’ve been out of it for awhile. When it goes on sale for 88 cents we’ll really stock up)
  • 24 cans of italian diced tomatoes- $0.44 each
  • 24 cans of sliced peaches- $0.89 each
  • 1 dragon roll (sushi that was a total impulse buy) $9.99

Just a side note- this case lot trip I saved 28%- or $43.20 more is what it would have normally cost me to get all these things if they weren’t on sale. That’s a good savings on things we would have bought and used anyway! It’s the little savings like that which add up over time.

Total cost for this day: $110.65

Running Total Budget for the 30 days used:

Groceries purchased: $567.10

Groceries used in meals: $158.37

Date Night: $74.33

Pizza: $49.38

Our budget for these 3 for the 30 days is: Groceries- $600, Date Nights- $100 & Pizza- $100 Since we may not use all the groceries purchased in this time, and will be using some things we have on hand already, we will be tracking both the running total of the best estimated cost of meals each day as well as the cost of groceries/date nights/pizza purchased during the 30 days.
