Don’t throw away those peels!!
Whenever you make a fruit jam, pie filling, etc. there can be a lot of waste with the peels. Don’t throw them away! You can use them to make a really easy syrup for pancakes, drinks or other flavorings. It’s so easy and you will sleep better at night knowing you’ve used all the fruit and had minimal waste. (at least I do haha)
It’s really simple- your crockpot does most of the work too!
Just put all your peels and normally discarded bits into the crockpot. Fill with water and cook on low for about a day. Then strain the peels saving the liquid, and now you have got all the flavors out of the peels you can throw them away.
With the remaining liquid you make a syrup by adding sugar.
Depending on the type of syrup you want will determine how much sugar you add. Generally a basic syrup you add 1 1/2 times as much sugar as liquid. For example, if you end up with 8 cups of liquid, you’d add 12 cups of sugar.
This will make a thin syrup that is great as a drink flavoring or to use in other recipes. But if you’re wanting a pancake syrup that’s more thick you’ll want to add double (or even 2 1/2 times) sugar to liquid.
Once you add the sugar, boil it for a couple of minutes then pour into jars and process for 10 minutes plus your extra altitude time. (I’m at 5500 feet so I always add 10 minutes to the processing time once it reaches a full boil)
